Background

Differences in bloodtypes between a cat and unborn kittens may result in danger to newborns. The risk can be assessed by establishing the bloodtypes of the parents. Breeding advice can be used to prevent potentially lethal combinations of bloodtypes. A test is no guarantee for a complete prevention of death of newborns. When a kitten with the A serotype (DNA: N/N or N/b) is born from a mother with Serotype B (DNA: b/b), the kitten may die because the mother milk may contain antibodies against the A serotype of the kitten. The purpose of breeding should be, to prevent a female cat with serotype B (DNA: b/b) from having offspring with the A serotype (DNA: N/b). Consequently, it is recommended to breed a female cat with serotype B (DNA: b/b) to a sire with serotype B (DNA: b/b).

Test specific information

The serological test provides an indication if the cat is producing antibodies against the unborn kittens. The DNA-test indicates the genetic risk prior to breeding. The serological and the DNA-test can be ordered separately.Genetic variation associated with the B blood group has been published in 2007. The test is available in most domestic cat breeds. The accuracy of results for wild cats has not been determined due to a lack of reference samples. In a few percent of the cases, results are inconclusive and status of the B blood group cannot be determined. This is caused by a combination of genetic variation that was not described in the publication. The DNA blood group test identifies cats that have the B serotype (two copies of b allele) and also cats that are B carriers (one copy of the b allele, A or AB serotypes). Because the DNA test cannot distinguish between serotype A versus AB, the non-b allele is reported as N. A female cat with serotype A or AB (DNA: N/N or N/b) can usually be bred with every other cat. NB. The test is no guarantee for a complete prevention of death of newborns.

Age

The genetic factor is continuously present, and will always be visible.

Throughput

Normally the result can be expected within 15 working days. This turn-around-time starts when both the sample and the fully filled-out and signed submission form have been received.

Location of disease or trait

This genetic factor is linked to antibodies present in blood.

Breed dependence

This DNA test is available for the following breeds: The test is validated for all breeds except Ragdolls and Turkish Angora.

Sample type

For this DNA test we accept the following materials: Blood EDTA, Blood Heparin, Swab. Please contact PharmaDNA if you wish to submit other material as listed.
