B931 Sex determination
Background
In many species, looking at an individual does not reveal the sex. In e.g. birds, males and females show no differences that may be used to identify the sex of a bird. Sex determination is based on a DNA test, in which the sex chromosomes (X, Y in animals and humans and W, Z in birds) are visualized. The DNA test reveals the sex of most species.
Age
For most species the sex remains the same during life.
Throughput
Normally the result can be expected within 15 working days. This turn-around-time starts when both the sample and the fully filled-out and signed submission form have been received.
Location of disease or trait
All cells with a nucleus contain the same sexchromosomes.
Breed dependence
For this test samples from all breeds are accepted.
Sample type
For this DNA test we accept the following materials: Feather, Blood EDTA, Blood Heparin, Tissue.
Result
The result of a sex determination shows, which sex an animal has.
Inheritance
The sex is inherited via sex chromosomes.
Severity of Disease
Sex determination is no disease.
