Background
The Myostatin gene is analysed for nine different variants, even though some may not be found in all breeds. Six variants are classified as disruptive. These cause muscle hypertrophy (double-muscling), larger birth weights, increased dystocia and enhanced tenderness. Three myostatin variants are referred to as missense, and will increase muscularity and reduce external and intramuscular fat, with no change in birth weight.
Disruptive variants are:
C313Y
nt419
E226X
nt821
E291X
Q204x
Missense variants are:
S105C
F94L
D182N
Test specific information
Myostatin results are reported as:
0 None of the nine possible variants are present
1, Variant One copy of the listed variant is present
2, Variant two copies of the listed variant are present
Age
The genetic factor is continuously present, and affects the meatquality.
Throughput
Normally the result can be expected within 25 working days. This turn-around-time starts when both the sample and the fully filled-out and signed submission form have been received.
Location of disease or trait
Meat quality can be assessed in the meat.
Breed dependence
For this test samples from all breeds are accepted.
Sample type
For this DNA test we accept the following materials: Hair, Semen, Blood EDTA, Blood Heparin, Tissue, Swab. Please contact PharmaDNA if you wish to submit other material as listed.
Result
Meat quality is based on many genetic factors. For each factor, a separate test result will be returned.
Inheritance
Various genetic factors influencing meat quality are inherited in a dominant or recessive mode. Meat quality is influenced by a large number of genetic factors.
