Background
In cattle, many twins are born. During the pregnancy, blood is exchanged in about 90 percent of the twins. In male-female twins, this results in male cells being present in the female calf. As a further result, the female has reduced fertility. Polish research has indicated, that also male calves are less fertile. The DNA-test indicates, if a female has male cells in her blood. Female animals with male cells are known as Freemartins.
Test specific information
The test for Freemartinism is based on the presence of male DNA in the blood of a female animal. The analysis is based on a visual interpretation with the possibility that a very small amount of male DNA can not be detected.
Age
The genetic factor is continuously present, and will always be visible.
Throughput
Normally the result can be expected within 15 working days. This turn-around-time starts when both the sample and the fully filled-out and signed submission form have been received.
Location of disease or trait
The chromosomal variation is present in the whole body.
Breed dependence
For this test samples from all breeds are accepted.
Sample type
For this DNA test we accept the following materials: Blood EDTA, Blood Heparin. Please contact PharmaDNA if you wish to submit other material as listed.
Result
The following results are possible:NO FREEMARTINISM: Male DNA had not been detectedFREEMARTINISM: Male DNA has been detected
Inheritance
Freemartinism is not inherited to the offspring.
