Background

Differences in bloodtypes between a cat and unborn kittens may result in danger to newborns. The risk can be assessed by establishing the bloodtypes of the parents. Breeding advice can be used to prevent potentially lethal combinations of bloodtypes. A test is no guarantee for a complete prevention of death of newborns. When a kitten with the A serotype (DNA: N/N or N/b) is born from a mother with Serotype B (DNA: b/b), the kitten may die because the mother milk may contain antibodies against the A serotype of the kitten. The purpose of breeding should be, to prevent a female cat with serotype B (DNA: b/b) from having offspring with the A serotype (DNA: N/b). Consequently, it is recommended to breed a female cat with serotype B (DNA: b/b) to a sire with serotype B (DNA: b/b).

Test specific information

The serological test provides an indication if the cat may produce antibodies against the unborn kittens. The DNA-test indicates the genetic risk prior to breeding. The serological and the DNA-test can be ordered separately. For more information regarding the DNA-test, please click the following link "> K793 Bloodtyping AB (DNA test) .

Age

Symptoms will develop at a young age. Within a few hours to a maximum of several weeks after birth, the characteristics that go with these genetic effects will become visible.

Throughput

Normally the result can be expected within 25 working days. This turn-around-time starts when both the sample and the fully filled-out and signed submission form have been received.

Location of disease or trait

This genetic factor is linked to antibodies present in blood.

Breed dependence

For this test samples from all breeds are accepted.

Sample type

For this DNA test we accept the following materials: Blood EDTA, Blood Heparin. Please contact PharmaDNA if you wish to submit other material as listed.

Result

With bloodgroup A or AB present in a female cat a minimal risk exists at death of littermates due to bloodgroupantagonism. With bloodgroup B present in a female cat a risk at death of littermates exists due to bloodgroupantagonism.

Inheritance

Various genetic factors influencing blood groups are inherited in a dominant or recessive mode. Blood groups are influenced by a large number of genetic factors.
